Whether you want to have a relaxing holiday in cafes and parks, or you want a packed full sightseeing break, there is such a variety of choice. A fantastically photogenic city; Rome is whatever you make it.
History
Rome is steeped in history reaching back hundreds of years. From buildings to art, statues and religion, there are many historical and interesting reasons why you should visit Rome.
One of Rome’s most famous and historical national icons is the Rome Colosseum. Originally designed to hold 60,000 people, the Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire.
Although it later ceased to be used for entertainment purposes, it continued to be used for things such as executions, gladiator contests, re-enactments of battles and mythological based dramas.
Tourists can go and look around the amazing Colosseum today, but because of the age of it, the inside is now only capable of holding a few hundred spectators on temporary seats. Performances, such as Elton John in 2005, often take place just outside of the Colosseum, using it as a beautiful backdrop.
Statues
Rome is home to many historic and interesting statues that are incredible works of art. The most famous of these are the ‘Talking Statues’. They are named so, because they are often used as places for people to voice their political and social opinions.
There are 6 notable talking statues, and 2 of those are the most prominent: Pasquino and Marforio. They are a must see when you visit Rome and are often covered in placards and graffiti holding everyone’s opinions.
Parks, Gardens and Fountains.
Of all European cities, Rome has some of the greenest areas with many public parks and nature reserves. The old Roman hippodrome is a large green garden and close to that are the lush gardens surrounding the baths of Caracalla and the Rose Garden.
The city of Rome has many different fountains created in varying styles including Medieval, Classical and Baroque. One of the most famous fountains in the world is found in Rome; the Trevi fountain.
The Trevi fountain is 20 meters wide and 26 meters high. It is a favourite of the tourists primarily due to the coin legend. If visitors throw a coin into the fountain it is thought that this ensures they will one day return to Rome. Receiving an estimated 3,000 Euro’s a day, the fountain is evidently popular and unfortunately some do try to steal from the fountain.
Conclusion
Rome is a beautiful and stylish city with history spanning over hundreds of years. A capital for religion, art and fashion amongst others, Rome is a wonderful place that attracts many visitors from around the world.
With so much to do and see in Rome, it is most definitely a fantastic place to visit and you will find no other city like it in the world.
